The Hub
A safe and comfortable space, with experienced staff on hand at all times.
What is the Hub?
Zero judgement. 100% Support.
Since the start of the group work programme in September 2013, our recovery network has evolved in several ways, allowing us to help more and more people. In the last year alone, over 2000 sets of feet walked through our doors and into a group, which was an increase of 50% on the previous year, demonstrating that group support is well attended and really works.
Group Sessions
The Hub provides group sessions that make a difference in the lives of those dealing with addiction.
We believe in the power of groups because they are:
- Confidential – Anything said in a group and the identities of anyone present stays in group. The island may be a small place but participation in a group session will always respect privacy and confidentiality.
- Safe – The Hub is a safe and comfortable space where trained and experienced staff are available at all times. This allows us to provide the support needed to break the cycle of addiction.
- Accessible – By offering sessions during the day and in the evening, there’s a group to suit everyone. This increases the likelihood of someone getting help and remaining in the programme.
- Motivating – Group sessions remind participants that they are not alone. Everyone also comes from a similar place and may often share similar experiences; this reinforces our philosophy of zero judgement.
Group Therapy
The Hub gives people the opportunity to share their experiences and to travel along the recovery journey in a group environment.
The Hub Services
Our variety of groups allow us to reach even more people who need it most:
The SMART Group
The Self-Management And Recovery Training programme (SMART) has been running internationally since 1994. Our group work lead, Louise, brought SMART to the island to empower participants with the practical skills, tools and support that allow them to successfully manage their relationship with a substance or behaviour and lead a satisfying and meaningful life.
SMART Lunches
Over 2 years ago we began offering a lunch on a Monday and Friday before daytime SMART meetings. This offers attendees a chance to relax, catch up and refuel before heading into a session. These lunches are free and provided by the charity.
SMART Friends and Family
This is an add-on to the SMART programme that invites family and friends to spend time concentrating on themselves and their goals, things that often get neglected when you are caring for someone with an addiction.
Auricular Acupuncture
This is a holistic therapy based on ancient traditional Chinese medicine. In this therapy, up to 5 acupuncture needles are placed into points in your ear lobe, which are particularly beneficial for drug and alcohol dependency, stress, anxiety, depression, smoking and promoting relaxation and sleep.
It has been found to have a significant effect in reducing cravings, therefore supporting recovery. Whilst the acupuncture needles are in place a guided relaxation session is led by one of our acupuncture-trained Motiv8 team members*. Needles are then removed and disposed of and in their place, seeds are placed on one of the points to keep the pressure point activated until your next session. Those who don’t like needles are still welcome to come along and follow the relaxation part of the session.
*Qualified NADA UK as a 5-point Acu-Detox Practitioners
Gambling Support Group
Since October 2023, a gambling support group has been held in our upstairs Hub, which is accessed via the main entrance. The group provides tools and education that help curb urges towards gambling.
FAQs
New to group sessions...
What if I don’t like needles and want to attend the acupuncture group?
Still come along and follow the relaxation part of the session.
I have never been to a group; can I just turn up?
For SMART sessions they are open meetings so anyone can attend.
For our wellbeing workshops and acupuncture you need to be either a client of Motiv8 or the Drug and Alcohol team.
If you want to check anything about groups, times and attending then drop us an email.
I used to come to groups and feel like I need to come back, can I?
Yes, absolutely. All support at Motiv8 is not time limited and you can rejoin at any time.
Where are the sessions held?
All group sessions take place at our newly refurbished Hub. The entrance is on the corner of Woodbourne and Murrays Road, through the grey gate. The gate is opened 10 minutes before each session and is locked during acupuncture sessions to allow for the session to be uninterrupted. Please get in touch should you need more directions.
The Hub Art Installation
Wonderwall
We are thrilled and honoured to showcase a recent art installation by the talented Monty Beaumont, the enigmatic abstract and lighting artist from the Isle of Man. A visionary in artistic expression, Monty has brought us Wonderwall, a beautiful representation of a Manx Glen adorned with lush native plants and flowers that bring serenity and hope to Motiv8’s service users.
The installation reveals subtle glimpses of gold beneath parts of the wall’s surface, symbolising the hidden strengths and inner beauty within each person. Wonderwall serves as a powerful reminder that everyone holds something unique and valuable within, waiting to be discovered and celebrated. It’s a tribute to resilience and the journey of self-discovery, offering inspiration to all who experience it.
