Sometimes, progress is found in the moments when we make a different choice.
Everyone’s journey towards positive change is different. For some people, it begins with recognising that their relationship with alcohol has changed. For others, it means finding the confidence to ask for support, talk openly about their experiences and begin to explore a different path.
At Motiv8 Addiction Services, we know that change doesn’t happen overnight. It is a personal journey, and every step forward matters.
Recently, we received some wonderful feedback from a person who had accessed our counselling support to explore their relationship with alcohol. Their words offer a powerful reminder of what can happen when someone has the time, space and support to make changes that feel right for them.
Recognising change
After spending time away from the Isle of Man, this person reflected on how far they had come. Although they had consumed some alcohol during their trip, they recognised that their behaviour was very different from what they had experienced in the past.
On occasions when they might previously have continued drinking until they blacked out, they found themselves able to make a different decision, head home and feel content with their choices.
They described this as having “turned a corner” in their relationship with alcohol.
Importantly, they also recognised that progress doesn’t mean every challenge has disappeared. They were realistic about the future, while feeling positive about the changes they had made and confident in their decision not to drink since returning home.
Their experience reminds us that positive change can be about more than simply counting days. It can also mean recognising old patterns, making different choices and feeling more in control of the direction your life is taking.
The value of having someone to talk to
Reflecting on their time with Motiv8, the person shared how beneficial the counselling sessions had been and how much they valued the opportunity to talk sharing that ‘I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the time you gave me and the support. It was extremely beneficial and I have no doubt that talking with you has helped me along the path that I have decided to follow.’
They described their counsellor as kind, approachable and an excellent listener, explaining that they left each session feeling confident and grateful for the conversation.
Their feedback highlights something at the heart of our work: sometimes, having someone who listens without judgement, takes the time to understand and helps you make sense of your experiences can make a real difference.
You don’t need to have all the answers before asking for support. You don’t need to know exactly what you want to change. You simply need a space where you can talk openly and explore what positive change might look like for you.
Every step forward matters
One of the most moving parts of this feedback was the person’s recognition that they had reached a point where they felt ready to continue independently, allowing support to be available to someone else who might need it more at that time.
This reflects their growing confidence and belief in the progress they have made, while remaining realistic that the future may bring challenges.
At Motiv8, we recognise that everyone’s needs are different. Support is personal, and there is no single definition of success. For some, progress means continuing to attend appointments; for others, it means feeling ready to take their next steps with greater confidence.
Whatever that journey looks like, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to make positive changes at their own pace.
A message of thanks
We were delighted to receive such thoughtful feedback about the support provided. The person’s kind words are a reminder of the importance of compassionate, person centred support and the difference that simply taking the time to listen can make.
We are incredibly proud of the people who take steps towards positive change, however big or small those steps may feel.
